UK Announces Increased Visa Fees Effective April 2025

The UK Home Office has confirmed new visa fee increases effective from April 9th, 2025, affecting student visas, visitor visas, and electronic travel authorisations (ETA).

Student visas for main applicants, dependents, and child students will rise by 7%, moving from UK£490 to UK£524. Similarly, short-term study visas for English language programmes (6-11 months) will increase from UK£200 to UK£214.

Visitor visas will see a 10% rise from UK£115 to UK£127, while the ETA fee for visa-exempt nationals will jump significantly by 60% to UK£16. This increase coincides with the mandatory extension of ETA requirements to EU visitors beginning April 2nd, 2025.

Emma English, Executive Director of the British Educational Travel Association (BETA), expressed concern, highlighting potential negative impacts on youth and educational travel sectors, already facing challenges from Brexit-related policies.

Canada Updates Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Rules for College Degree Graduates

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced an important update to the eligibility criteria for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Effective immediately, public college students completing degree programmes will now qualify for the PGWP regardless of their field of study.

Previously, from November 2024, IRCC required applicants to graduate in specific eligible fields. This latest update removes that condition for college-based degree graduates, aligning their eligibility with university degree holders. All degree graduates must still demonstrate language proficiency at Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 7 in English or Niveaux de Compétence Linguistique Canadiens (NCLC) 7 in French in all four language areas.

Non-degree college graduates, however, continue to face requirements to study within one of six approved fields—agriculture and agri-food; education; healthcare; STEM; trade; and transport—and must show language proficiency at CLB 5 or NCLC 5.

Larissa Bezo, President and CEO of the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE), described this as a "significant update," addressing earlier concerns about the perceived undervaluation of colleges and their recruitment challenges.

A 2021 CBIE survey indicated 72.6% of international students planned to apply for a PGWP, underscoring the importance of clear and supportive eligibility policies.

New Zealand Moves Back to Regional Vocational Education Model

In a significant policy shift, the New Zealand government has begun dismantling Te Pūkenga, the national vocational education institution, to re-establish independent, regional Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs).

Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills, Penny Simmonds, emphasized that this change aims to empower regional decision-making and encourage stronger collaboration with local industries. The government believes a regional approach better serves learners, industries, and communities, enhancing local economic growth and providing better career opportunities.

Originally established in 2020 by merging 16 regional institutions, Te Pūkenga will officially close by the end of 2026. New regional ITPs, either autonomous or federated, will open their doors that same year.

Minister Simmonds highlighted the importance of vocational education in boosting regional economies and retaining young talent and skilled workers in local areas.

Currently enrolled domestic and international students will seamlessly transition to the newly formed ITPs, ensuring uninterrupted education. Minister Simmonds reassured learners, stating that they "can continue to have confidence in their courses and qualifications."

In 2023, Te Pūkenga had 8,620 international student enrolments, marking a steady recovery from pandemic lows.

Further announcements regarding the specific structure and organization of the new regional institutes are expected later this year.
