Ireland Caps Student Leases to Align with Academic Year

Ireland has taken a significant step in supporting students by passing legislation that bans the practice of 51-week leases on student accommodations. Now, to align more closely with the academic year, they are limited to 41 weeks.

This move, backed by the Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Act 2024, also permits students to serve a notice of termination between May 1st and October 1st, easing potential financial pressures during the off-school months.

Student groups have hailed the decision for its potential to reduce the financial burden on students and their families, while accommodation providers are allowed to request only one month's rent in advance, consistent with other residential lettings.

However, the new regulations have raised concerns among property developers and investors about the potential impact on future investments and new student housing development.

Critics argue that the added restrictions may complicate operations and financial planning, potentially reducing the development of new student accommodations.

Despite these challenges, the legislation is crucial in prioritizing student welfare over commercial gains, particularly when many students face housing insecurity.

Enhanced Safeguards for International Students in B.C

British Columbia is setting a new standard for international education with the introduction of a comprehensive Educational Quality Assurance (EQA) Code of Practice, effective from January 2025.

This initiative aims to ensure transparency and fairness in recruiting and supporting international students, mandating clear marketing, transparency in tuition costs, and enhanced student support services.

This move is part of a broader strategy by the B.C. Ministry for Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills to improve the quality and reliability of education provided to international students, ensuring they are well informed and adequately supported throughout their educational journey.

Furthermore, the province is implementing stricter regulations for study travel agents and educational institutions, emphasizing accountability and quality assurance in their operations.

Agents will now undergo thorough reference checks, and institutions must maintain meticulous records of their agreements and interactions with these agents.

Additionally, public institutions will face a cap on international student enrolment at 30% of the total student body, alongside obligations to develop strategic plans for global education that include robust student services and housing support.

These measures reflect a significant commitment by the B.C. government to protect the rights and enhance the educational experiences of international students, promoting a balanced and equitable learning environment.

New Work Rights for Partners of International Students in New Zealand

New Zealand has broadened work visa access for partners of international students enrolled in courses leading to careers in critical sectors.

As per the recent update from Immigration New Zealand, the Partner of Student Work Visa now extends to partners of students pursuing specific Level 7 or 8 bachelor's and bachelor honours degrees. These degrees must be aligned with professions on the 'Green List,' which includes roles that require professional registration, such as nursing, healthcare, and education.

This enhanced eligibility allows partners open work rights and benefits their school-aged dependents, who can now be considered domestic students for tuition purposes.

This change aims to attract skilled international students by offering more inclusive benefits for their families, supporting New Zealand’s commitment to filling high-need occupations in the country.

The expanded list includes fields such as medicine, dentistry, midwifery, and teaching, among others, ensuring that New Zealand continues to strengthen its workforce in key service areas.

For more detailed information on the eligible programmes and further specifics on the visa changes, refer to the latest amendment circular from Immigration New Zealand.
