Canada Ends Student Direct Stream for Study Permits |
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has officially ended the Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigeria Student Express (NSE), effective immediately as of November 8, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. ET.
The SDS program, launched in 2018, provided faster processing for eligible postsecondary students from China, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines. It was later expanded to include residents of Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Senegal, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. The NSE offered a similar expedited process for students from Nigeria.
In its announcement, IRCC stated that the decision was made to strengthen program integrity, address student vulnerability, and ensure equal access to the study permit application process for all international students.
Students from former SDS countries are now directed to apply through Canada’s regular study permit process. Applications submitted under the SDS or NSE programs before the cutoff will still be processed under the respective stream’s conditions.

Canada Updates Rules for International Students: Work Hours, School Transfers, and Reporting |
The Canadian government has introduced new measures for international students, focusing on work opportunities, school transfers, and compliance reporting. These updates, announced by Immigration Minister Marc Miller on 15 November 2024, aim to support students while ensuring the integrity of the International Student Program.
More Work Hours
Students can now work 24 hours per week off campus during the academic term, an increase from the previous 20 hours. Full-time work remains allowed during academic breaks. Minister Miller stated this change strikes a balance between providing financial opportunities and maintaining academic focus.
Stricter Rules for Switching Schools
Students must now apply for and be approved for a new study permit before changing their Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
Compliance Reporting by Institutions
Schools must submit compliance reports to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) twice a year, confirming whether international students remain enrolled. Non-compliance may lead to penalties for students and institutions, with schools potentially suspended from enrolling new international students.
These changes build on other reforms introduced this year, including limits on study permits for some programs and adjustments to Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility. Minister Miller emphasized that these updates are designed to support students’ success while maintaining the program’s integrity.
